A Taste of Home – Organic Gardening

Nothing is better than spending some time with your loved ones. I donโ€™t have many opportunities doing so as many members of my family live in various countries (including myself) so it is close to impossible meeting every single one of them when going home for a few days.

However, this time it was my dadโ€™s 60th birthday party so almost all of us got together. It was nice to see faces I had not seen in years.

I was also happy to be at home at this time of the year when the garden is filled with organic produce whether it is fruit or vegetables. Itโ€™s been almost 10 years since I was home in summer! Can you believe it! 10 years without enjoying the fresh produce! It canโ€™t get any fresher!

My family grows almost everything so they are pretty self-sufficient! They donโ€™t use any pesticides so all the produce is organic. I love when I go to the garden and I know there is some treat waiting for me. Gooseberries, strawberries, raspberries โ€“ red, white and blackcurrant, apples, cherries, sour cherries, blackberriesโ€ฆ

When it comes to vegetables the first thing I look for is peas. I always say I go for lunch to the garden โ€“ I just pick anything I like and eat as much as I can. Itโ€™s like an All You Can Eat Restaurant for me!

This year the zucchinis were enormous! There were cucumbers next to them growing pretty fast and mum managed to pickle some of them. Beets, carrots, kale, garlic, tomatoes, onion, spring onion, my favorite sweet (light yellow) peppers, radish, potatoes, herbsโ€ฆ

I am back at home in Spain now and thinking of all the goodies I left behind in the garden. I packed some bits and pieces (see one huge zucchini, white and blackcurrant, cucumbers, garlic and some peppers. If we had more space in our suitcase, it would have been filled with almost everything from the garden!

Here are some pictures of what a real organic produce look like!

  1. The food just looks amazing! Job well done! Unfortunately I don’t have a garden, living in a big city where space is precious and scarce.. But hope to have one someday.. When I was growing up we had a lot of strawberries, they were really easy and gave lots of delicious fruits! We also had raspberries, and some potatoes. It really was great to have all of that just from the garden :)

Have you already decided what to make with the veggies?

    1. We have no garden either and I sometimes miss one. I remember my grandmother used to have like hundreds of strawberries. We loved them. We have already eaten everything but garlic :) Nothing left. I made a dessert using white currants which was delicious. Post coming soon.
