Orange Julius with Fresh Orange Juice

I make this Orange Julius with freshly squeezed orange juice, a little milk, ice and maple syrup. Blend everything for about 30 seconds and it turns cold and frothy, with no frozen orange juice concentrate needed.

I use maple syrup here for the flavor it brings, not just the sweetness.

Ingredients and substitutions

Fresh orange juice: You will need 2 measured cups. In my latest test, six medium oranges gave me 2 cups of juice. You may need more or fewer depending on their size and juiciness.

You can also use 2 cups of store-bought 100% orange juice. This brings the preparation time down to less than 5 minutes because the juice is already prepared. Avoid anything labeled orange drink.

Ingredients for Orange Julius: halved oranges, ice, milk, maple syrup and vanilla extract.

Ice: This chills the drink and helps make it frothy.

Milk: I use regular milk. I would not leave it out, or you will have blended orange juice and ice rather than an Orange Julius. Another type of milk can be used, but the flavor and froth may change.

Maple syrup: This sweetens the drink and adds a mild maple flavor.

Vanilla extract: I prefer this drink with vanilla, but you can leave it out.

How to make an Orange Julius

Juice the oranges, then strain the juice and pour it into a blender.

Add the ice, milk, maple syrup and vanilla extract, if using. Blend until smooth and frothy, about 30 seconds, depending on your blender.

Helpful tips

I like using Valencia oranges when they are available because they are usually juicy and do not tend to have very thick skin.

This drink gradually loses its foam and can start to separate as it sits, so I recommend serving it immediately. You can juice the oranges and measure the other ingredients ahead, then blend everything just before serving.

I have also made this with honey. It tasted sweeter to me, so I would start with a little less than the maple syrup.

Fresh Orange Julius

A cold and frothy Orange Julius made with freshly squeezed orange juice, milk, ice and maple syrup. It makes 2 servings and takes about 10 minutes.
Prep Time: 10 minutes
Total Time: 10 minutes
Servings: 2
Author: Julia

Ingredients

  • 2 cups freshly squeezed orange juice from about 6 medium oranges
  • 1 cup ice cubes
  • ¼ cup milk
  • 2 tablespoons maple syrup
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract optional

Instructions

  • Juice the oranges. Strain the freshly squeezed juice and pour it into a blender.
  • Add the ice, milk, maple syrup and vanilla extract, if using. Blend until smooth and frothy, about 30 seconds, depending on your blender.
  • Pour into two glasses and serve immediately.

Notes

  1. You will need 2 cups (500 ml) of freshly squeezed orange juice. Orange size and juiciness vary, so you may need more or fewer than 6.
  2. Store-bought 100% orange juice can be used instead. Use 2 cups (500 ml) and avoid anything labeled orange drink.
  3. Honey can be used instead of maple syrup. Start with a little less because it tasted sweeter in my test.
  4. This Orange Julius is best enjoyed immediately because it can separate and lose its foam as it sits.
  5. The recipe makes about 3 cups (750 ml), enough for 2 servings.
