Ingredients for a recipe: puff pastry, hot dogs, egg wash and everything bagel seasoning.

Shopping list for hot dogs in puff pastry

  • Puff pastry – My favorite is the ready-rolled sheet of puff pastry that the supermarkets keep in the chilled section. You don’t need to thaw it – it is ready to use. If you prefer the frozen one, then go ahead and use it.
  • Hot dogs – I used 2 packages of smoked hot dogs, each of them was about 5.5-inch (14-centimeter) long.
  • Everything bagel seasoning – When I have all the ingredients on hand, I make this from scratch. It is so easy and takes literally 2 minutes. If you don’t want to use this seasoning, you can omit it or try using poppy seeds as an alternative.
  • Egg – For egg wash.
  • Flour – Only when using frozen pastry that needs to be rolled out.

Tools and kitchen gadgets to have on hand

  • Baking sheet/tray and baking parchment paper – You will need 2-quarter sheet pans or 1-half.
  • Pizza cutter – This works great for quick cutting of the pastry. If you don’t have it, use a knife with a flat blade.
  • A small bowl & fork – To whisk the egg.
  • Pastry or silicone brush – For brushing the egg wash.
  • Oven

Optional toppings:

  • Cheese – Parmesan, mozzarella or other shredded cheese you like.
  • Seeds – Sesame seeds or poppy seeds.

Serving suggestions

Puff pastry hot dogs, just like sausage rolls, can be served simply with mustard and ketchup. We also love dipping them in sweet chili sauce or garlic aioli. I love serving these at game nights with spicy mayo!

Puff pastry hot dogs pair perfectly with classic condiments like mustard and ketchup, but you can also try:

  • Honey mustard
  • Cheese dip
  • BBQ sauce

Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge. Reheat at 350 Fahrenheit (180 Celsius) for 5 minutes or until warm.

FAQs

Can I make puff pastry hot dogs ahead?

Yes! You can assemble them in advance, store them in the fridge and bake when needed. However, they taste best when served fresh. For the best texture, enjoy them within an hour of baking, as the pastry will gradually soften over time.

Can I use different types of sausage?

Absolutely! Try bratwurst, chicken sausage or even plant-based hot dogs.

Useful tips for the best puff pastry wrapped hot dogs

  • Use chilled pastry. Cold puff pastry puffs up better in the oven.
  • Cut the hot dogs into smaller pieces for bite-sized appetizers.
  • Instead of everything bagel seasoning, you can also only sesame seeds.
  • One batch of these will fit on a 13×18-inch (33×46-centimeter) baking sheet. You can use 2 quarter sheets instead.

Puff Pastry Hot Dogs

Crispy, golden-brown puff pastry hot dogs are an easy 30-minute appetizer. Perfect for parties or a quick snack, with your favorite dip!
Prep Time10 minutes
Cook Time15 minutes
Total Time25 minutes
Servings: 12
Author: Julia

Ingredients

  • 1 sheet puff pastry (260 grams), see note 1
  • 12 hot dogs (400 grams), see note 2
  • 1 egg (beaten)
  • 1 teaspoon everything bagel seasoning (5 grams)

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • Chilled pastry: Unfold/unroll the puff pastry onto a clean worktop.
  • Frozen (thawed) pastry: Dust a clean worktop with flour. Place the pastry over and roll out thin into a square measuring about 12×12-inch (30×30-centimeters).
  • Cut the pastry into strips that are at least 1 inch (2 centimeters) shorter than the length of the hot dogs. If you feel that you won’t have enough pastry, you can cut them even shorter.
  • To find out how thick the other side should be, simply take one hot dog and roll the pastry around it, leaving no more than a quarter of an inch (1/2-centimeter) to overlap. This is your "template" to cut the rest of the pastry to this size. I use a pizza cutter.
  • Place each hot dog on a pastry strip and roll it up tight, sealing the edges by pressing the ends together. Transfer onto the baking sheet and repeat with the rest. Make a few slits in the pastry as well.
  • Brush the hot dogs with egg wash and sprinkle with everything bagel seasoning.
  • Bake on the middle or lower rack in the preheated oven for 15 minutes. After this time, check the hot dogs. If they look pale and not puffed, leave them 2 or 3 minutes longer. After this time check again. Mine take 18 minutes. They are ready, when their bottoms and tops are nice brown, and the pastry is puffed.
  • Let them cool slightly before serving with mustard, ketchup, aioli or your favorite dips.

Notes

  1. You will need about 9 ounces (260 grams). I like using ready-rolled chilled puff pastry. This is ready for baking, no rolling out is necessary. Depending on where you live, it does come in different sizes and shapes from round (you don’t want this one) to square or rectangle. If you don’t have this in your store or prefer frozen puff pastry, then go ahead and buy that one. Note that you will need flour and a rolling pin to roll it out. I used a square of a 12×12-inch (30×30-centimeters).
  2. The 12 hot dogs weighed about 14 ounces (400 grams) and were 5.5 inches long (14 centimeters). Now, if you are using longer hot dogs, I would recommend cutting them in half.
  3. Everything bagel seasoning can be substituted with sesame seeds, poppy seeds or omitted completely.
