This turmeric hot chocolate will not only warm you up but also give you a comforting, cozy treat!

Why you should make turmeric hot chocolate:

  • It’s healthy – turmeric contains curcumin which has anti-inflammatory properties. Check out the possible benefits of curcumin.
  • It’s made from scratch – nothing is better than a cup of homemade hot chocolate.
  • It’s different – but if you like trying new things or looking for healthier alternatives, then you should give it a go!

I have a few more refreshing drink ideas for you here:

A cup of turmeric hot chocolate with a spoon.

Ingredients needed to make turmeric hot chocolate:

  • Milk
  • Unsweetened cocoa powder
  • Ground turmeric
  • Coconut oil
  • Black pepper
  • Cayenne pepper
  • Honey

How to make turmeric hot chocolate

In a saucepan combine the milk, cocoa powder, turmeric and coconut oil. Give it a good whisk and bring it to a boil. Whisk occasionally to get rid of any turmeric or cocoa lumps and to make sure the milk won’t stick to the bottom of the saucepan.

When you bring it to a boil, turn off the heat and stir in black pepper and cayenne pepper. Now all you have to do is pour this in cups and serve.

Can I substitute some of the ingredients?

Yes. You can substitute some of the ingredients. Just bear in mind that certain ingredients are used in this turmeric hot chocolate on purpose. For example, coconut oil and black pepper help your body absorb the curcuma from turmeric. If you don’t have coconut oil, add some butter instead. I don’t recommend omitting black pepper.

Cayenne pepper can be omitted. Instead of honey, you can use any sweetener of your choice.

As for the milk: I personally haven’t tried using dairy-free milk but I don’t see a reason why it shouldn’t work.

  1. Delicious relatively low cal and very healthy version of hot chocolate! I love this recipe :)5 stars

  2. Can I use Stevia for the sweetener? Just making sure that it won’t disrupt the absorption of the turmeric.

  3. Delicious, perfect for a rainy day. I let it simmer and add orange peels and grapefruit pith for flavor and vitamin C, then strain it
I usually add aa lil boiling hot water to thin it out as it simmers, and to correct any failed mixing of the cacao.

  9. OMG. That is literally all that was going through my head while drinking this. OMG THIS IS DELICOUS. I have made hot chocolate from scratch before but the cocoa powder stays kind of powdery/chalky feeling. This was nothing but creamy. And the turmeric adds just something different that is so good. I left out the Cheyanne pepper though.
